I Punched Keanu Reeves

I was going to write this first post on my favorite soundtrack of all-time, The Dark Crystal by Trevor Jones. There’s the prequel coming out (“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”) that looks amazing, so it seemed timely, even while the original Henson genius movie is timeless. It has everything I love in a score, bold themes, multiple colors with full orchestra, synths and primitive instruments, while simultaneously being both fully bold and fully subservient to the story at the same time. I figured: ‘I’ll put on the soundtrack and start writing,’ but then I wanted to listen to something else:

Best believe I punched Keanu Reeves

And it was better than any scene

This is the opening line from the closing credits track of the Netflix rom-com Always Be My Maybe, distinctly more low-brow than my first choice. In this movie, the male lead is a talented slacker musician with a band called Hello Peril. The movie features three original and fantastic comedy rap songs, with the standout being “I Punched Keanu Reeves,” which also happens to be an important plot point in this movie. And really just important for all of us in general.

The song is simultaneously stupid and hilarious, with a fantastic beat by Dan the Automator. In other words, it’s the perfect musical choice for a rom-com: fun and expertly executed.

Is Hello Peril a real band? The smile on my face right now definitely is.
